1) How do I know when to replace the screw on a Screwpull Lever model?

After opening approximately 2000 bottles, the Lever Model may show signs of wear, making the Lever Model a little less easy to use. It is then necessary to replace the screw. Signs to look for:

  • When the Teflon coating on the bottom spiral begins to wear
  • If the screw is not extracting the cork every time

2) How do I replace a screw on the Lever model?

  • Simply unscrew the protective head and remove screw
  • Insert the new screw and replace the protective head

3) Where can I purchase a replacement screw from:

Any David Jones, selected Myers stores and selected specialty stores throughout Australia . The item code is 8845.

4) Can I use Screwpull corkscrews to extract any kind of corks?

No, the Screwpull Lever Model, Table Model and Pocket Model are best suited to removing natural corks.

  • The Table Model and Pocket Model are especially suited to removing corks from vintage red wines due to the extra long Teflon coated screw (many premium red wines have an extra long cork). Old corks, which are more fragile, should be pulled out very slowly.
  • The Waiter's Friend model is the only model suitable for removing plastic corks. It has a stainless steel, 5-spiral worm & is mechanically strong enough to absorb the additional force required to remove plastic corks.

5) Are there any limitations to the Screwpull Lever model?

Yes, avoiding the following conditions will assist in extending the life of your Lever model.

  • The Lever model is not designed to put a cork into an opened bottle
  • The Lever model is not designed to uncork a Prosecco bottle. Prosecco is Italian sparkling wine that sometimes comes in a wide sparkling bottle. If the cork is sealed with a wax plug, the wax plug must be removed before using the Screwpull Lever model. Wax seals are seldom used these days because they are hand applied. They are usually used on ports and fortified wines, sealing the cork instead of using traditional capsules.

  6) What should I do to care for my Screwpull model?

  • The accumulation of wine deposits on the corkscrew and particles of cork on various parts of the Lever Model can affect its efficiency. Clean it regularly with warm soapy water.
  • Remember to change the screw on Lever Models regularly (see above).
  • Never use lubricants on a Screwpull corkscrew.
